& Goals.

Considering the needs of present and future generations, Xaxli’p Community Forest Corporation (XCFC) carries out ecologically and culturally sustainable land use for the benefit of Xaxli’pmec and the other beings in Xaxli’p Survival Territory.  The responsibilities of XCFC extend throughout Xaxli’p Survival Territory, which includes the Community Forest Agreement area.

Ecologically sustainable land use means maintaining or restoring the natural ecological integrity of the land.  Ecological integrity means all of the plant, animal, and microorganism species found in Xaxli’p Survival Territory, and the natural processes, like water and nutrient cycles, that maintain these species through time.  The natural ecological integrity of Xaxli’p Survival Territory and restoration needs are described in the Xaxli’p Ecosystem-based Plan (EBP).  Culturally sustainable land use means maintaining or restoring Xaxli’p land use, and meeting the needs of present and future generations, including ecological restoration of Xaxli’p lands and the development of a diverse sustainable local economy.  Culturally sustainable land use is guided by Ntsuwa’lhkalha Tl’ákmen, “our way of life,” or the Xaxli’p Traditional Use Study (TUS).

The goals of the Xaxli’p Community Forest Corporation are to:

• achieve ecologically and culturally sustainable land use through restoration of degraded ecosystems throughout Xaxli’p Survival Territory;
• achieve culturally sustainable land use through educating youth and others in Ntsuwa’lhkalha Tl’ákmen and applying our way of life across Xaxli’p Survival Territory;
• restore water quality, quantity, and timing of flow throughout Xaxli’p Survival Territory through restoration of degraded ecosystems;
• develop high quality timber and non-timber forest products; and
• develop a diverse, sustainable community economy that initially will be subsidized by funds for restoration, and will gradually move to an economy based on the harvesting and processing of value-added timber and non-timber forest products.

The goals of the XCFC will be achieved by applying the contents of, and the Xaxli’p values and principles that underlie the Ntsuwa’lhkalha Tl’ákmen (TUS) and Xaxli’p Ecosystem-based Plan (EBP).  These two documents will be updated from time-to-time as more information about Xaxli’p lands and culture becomes available.  Updates to the TUS and the EBP will be discussed and confirmed through Xaxli’p community meetings organized by Xaxli’p Chief and Council.  Updates will always be consistent with Xaxli’p culture as expressed in Ntsuwa’lhkalha Tl’ákmen (TUS).
